From the President: Become a Role Model in 2011

From PBH President and CEO Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., R.D.

Last year saw several milestones for PBH.  First lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, the new Shop Healthy! iPhone app, new radio PSAs, the debut of the America’s More Matters Pledge: Fruits & Veggies … Today and Every Day! online pledge campaign, the 2010 Gap Analysis and the 2010 State of the Plate Report, the new National Action Plan to Promote Health Through Increased Fruit and Vegetable Consumption and NAP Report Card, website enhancements, and a new address, just to name a few!

Throughout 2010, PBH made great strides in getting the
Fruits & Veggies—More Matters message of eating more delicious, nutritious fruits and vegetables to consumers. In 2011, we will continue to reach out to Moms and other consumers in an effort to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables with the message that eating more fruits and vegetables can provide better health, help control weight, and ease budget concerns.

I encourage all of you to support the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters brand; more support, YOUR support, really does matter. See the story about becoming a Role Model below and challenge yourself and your company to attain Role Model or Champion status in 2011. With your help, we can keep the success of Fruits & Veggies—More Matters growing in 2011.

The America’s More Matters Pledge: Fruits & Veggies … Today and Every Day! online pledge campaign continues to promote the health of all Americans by encouraging them to promise to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in their meals and snacks. Use the Fruit & Veggie Happenings Page to Promote Events

The Fruit & Veggie Happenings page allows those who upload scheduled events or classes to obtain wider visibility for and increase attendance at those events. This extra exposure helps to extend consumer marketing and education efforts. Consumers use this page to search for activities in their local community by typing in their zip code.

Photos, PDFs and information about the same event or activity occurring at multiple locations can also be uploaded, making it very easy and convenient to populate this interactive tool. Visit the Fruit & Veggie Happenings page today to see how easy it is to add fruit and veggie news, events, and activities to this page.

PBH Seeks Retailer and Supplier Role Models

PBH is looking for retailers, growers, shippers, and processors to become role models for Fruits & Veggies—More Matters. The efforts of these donors will be identified and referenced in PBH's ongoing public relations activities via consumer and trade press releases and in our annual report. They will also be recognized at a special luncheon at PBH’s Annual Meeting celebrating Fruits & Veggies—More Matters role models.

Using the promotional tools provided in the Retailer and Supplier toolkits is a good start toward achieving Role Model status, and the best place to begin is by adding the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters web button to the company website as a link to www.FruitsandVeggiesMoreMatters.org

Website Poll: Holiday Eating

As you may know, we have an ongoing poll available on the
Fruits & Veggies—More Matters website that provides, not only an entertaining game for the visitors, but also a way to gather useful information about visitors and content for future updates. A recent poll asked about how many fruits and vegetables they were eating over the holidays. From this, PBH can determine what content might offer consumers the most compelling case to increase their consumption.

The question specifically asked, “Get Enough Fruits & Veggies Over the Holidays?” and asked responders to select from the responses; No, Too Many Parties!, No, Always Shopping!, I Always Get Enough, No, Always Eating Out!, Don't Keep Up with It, or No, Another Reason. Out of 79 poll responders, 44 percent (35) said they always eat enough fruits and vegetables, 24 percent (19) said they don’t keep up with how many fruits and vegetables they eat, 15 percent (12) said they didn’t eat enough fruits and veggies because they were always eating out, 9 percent (7) said they didn’t eat enough for another reason, 4 percent (3) said they didn’t eat enough fruits and veggies because of all the parities, and 4 percent (3) said they didn’t eat enough because they spent so much time shopping.

New poll questions will look to website visitors for information about their lifestyles and their current level of understanding of the importance of fruits and vegetables, driving new enhancements to the website. These polls have proved to be quite useful as they, along with many other forms of user feedback, have resulted in significant website additions and enhancements. For more information about the surveys or their results, contact PBH Nutrition Website Development Manager Sandra Ely.

PBH is pleased to recognize the following companies as leaders in the fruit and vegetable industry and thanks them for their support. Their generous contributions help make possible PBH’s many activities to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. PBH thanks all current and new donors who have contributed to the foundation from Dec. 10, 2010 through Jan. 4, 2011. Together we can make a difference in the nation’s fruit and vegetable consumption. To find out how you can support PBH, and grow your business in the process, contact PBH Development Director Renee Bullion.
