The need for a web-based Phytochemical Information Center (PIC) was realized after PBH and USDA partnered to build a database of phytochemicals in fruits, vegetables, and nuts consumed in the U.S. While general information about phytochemicals is housed in the PIC, values of various phytochemicals in foods is maintained and updated on USDA's Nutrient Data Laboratory website.

More than 30 producers and commodity boards provided funding that enabled USDA to start the research earlier than would have otherwise been possible.
