| PBH Supporters Celebrate National Fruits & Veggies—More Matters Month
Chartwells Higher Education, a division of Compass Group, NAD, is celebrating National Fruits & Veggies—More Matters® Month by:
- Encouraging students attending the schools it services to try new and exciting salad combinations by providing select salad ingredients and suggested salad bar recipes that rotate every day. Every recipe includes the number of fruit & veggie servings and a cool nutrition tip.
- Providing fruit and vegetable frequency cards to remind students to get their 5-9 servings a day of fruits & veggies. When students purchase 9 servings of fruits or vegetables, they get their 10th serving for free!
- Hosting Chef’s Tables highlighting seasonal fruits & veggies, like local apples, where chefs get in the middle of the action and show students how to prepare apples for recipes, offer samples of different varieties, make suggestions on which apples are appropriate for different uses (baked vs. hand fruit), and discussing the health benefits of seasonal fruits & veggies.
- Using table tents that highlight the benefits of different fruits and vegetables, including information on serving sizes and tips on how to increase the number of fruits and vegetables a student eats each day.

| New Study Finds Kids Copy Parents’ Fruit & Veggie Consumption
A new study reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests that parents who want their preschoolers to eat fruits and vegetables should step up to the plate and eat more themselves. In a study of over 1,300 families, researchers found that when parents increased their own consumption of fruits and veggies, their young children’s consumption rose as well.
These findings indicate how important it is for parents to serve as examples to their children by eating a healthy diet. Researchers say the survey also suggests that providing parents with nutrition education during the early stages of parenting could help address the problem of childhood obesity.
The Fruits & Veggies—More Matters website, www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org, offers parents tips to help persuade children to eat more fruits and vegetables. At the site, parents will find recipes and tips that help the whole family easily fit more fruits & veggies into their meals and snacks.
The results of this study demonstrate the importance of parents modeling healthy behaviors, especially when it comes to what they serve at meals and what they eat themselves. It also suggests the need for early parent education programs as a means for improving the fruit and vegetable intake of parents and young children. | PBH Releases Tips for Keeping Fruits and Veggies Affordable
The rising cost of food is taking a big bite out of many families’ budgets and PBH wants to make sure consumers aren’t cutting costs by skipping healthy fruits and vegetables. Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., R.D., compiled a list of tips to make sure healthy eating isn’t sacrificed as food prices rise. In the release, Pivonka debunks the myth that produce is too expensive by suggesting consumers buy fruits and vegetables that are readily available, adding that canned, frozen and dried fruits and vegetables can be less expensive and just as nutritious. Retailers and State Fruit & Veggie Nutrition Coordinators are encouraged to forward this release to their local media outlets. For more information, view PBH’s press statement, or read the tips.

| Four New Games Now Live on FoodChamps.org
Anticipated additions to PBH kids’ website, www.foodchamps.org, are now up and running!
The new games include:
- What Color – encourages kids to select the fruits & veggies that match a specified color
- Find It – encourages kids to find the hidden fruits & veggies in a picture
- Healthy Choices Maze – lets kids navigate their way through food choices
- Farm to Fork – kids complete various interactive steps while learning how fruits and vegetables are grown, harvested, shipped, marketed, and prepared
There is also a new Party Planner section that lets kids and their Moms plan for a Fruit and Veggie Color Champions™ themed party. User testing conducted on the new features with kids two through eight years of age yielded positive results. These new games, and all the activities on the site, are age appropriate for kids two through eight years old, but may be suitable for kids a little younger or a little older, depending on the individual child. The Get Kids Involved section of www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org links to the kids’ site and offers a quick preview of what they will find there.

| Fruits & Veggies—More Matters on the Road Again
PBH Senior Vice President Connie Fisher, Ed.D, and Jennifer Seymour, Lead Epidemiologist for CDC’s Nutrition Guidelines Development and Recommendations Team, will speak at the National WIC Association 2008 Nutrition & Breastfeeding Conference in Louisville, Ky., September 23 - 25. Their topic of discussion will be “Fruits & Veggies—More Matters: A National Health Initiative, the Power of Partnerships.”
This presentation will provide an overview of the research behind the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters brand, the licensing process, multiple channel message dissemination, and how the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters initiative fits into CDC’s bigger picture of nutrition targets. The presentation is designed to give the audience a better understanding of the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters national health initiative, how and when it can be used in conjunction with the new WIC package, who can use it, and the nutrition issues to consider when using it.

| Fruits & Veggies—More Matters Logo Review Process
All uses of the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters logo must be reviewed and approved by PBH. This includes new uses of the logo by licensees who have previously had other logo uses approved.
Use of this logo requires a current license. To begin the logo approval process, please e-mail an image of the item, with the logo already placed, to PBH Licensing & Partnership Manager Kathleen Ruf. If the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters logo already appears on signage, packaging, or any other applications without having been submitted for review, please send an image of this item to PBH Licensing & Partnership Manager Kathleen Ruf Please allow up to one week for logo review, although most are completed in two business days.

| Celebration of Life Auction Items Needed, Make Reservations Now!
The 2009 Celebration of Life Dinner-Auction and Dance will take place in Monterey, Calif., April 4, 2009, coinciding with PBH’s annual board and spring committee meetings. This fun-filled evening will begin with a cocktail reception, followed by a silent auction, gourmet dinner, then the live auction and dancing.
Space is limited, so book your reservations now – they are $360 each or $3,300 for a table of 10. You can also increase your visibility and support a great cause at the same time by donating an item for the live and silent auctions. | Kick the School Year Off Right: Become an Educator Resource
PBH offers some great nutrition education resources for elementary school instructors. One way for members to help spread the word about Fruits & Veggies—More Matters is to let local school officials know about these programs. Retailers: make sure local teachers know about any “Take Your Child to the Supermarket” and “Supermarket School Tour” events scheduled for stores in the area and ask them to attend.
All members are encouraged to talk with local teachers about the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters consumer site www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org and the kids’ site www.foodchamps.org. Both sites offer accurate and reliable nutrition education resources to support school wellness programs and are available to them free of charge.
Bear in mind the goodwill that participating in the "Adopt-A-School Program" could generate for your business or civic organization. Talk with members of the local chapter of the Kiwanis organization; the Lions Club; Rotary Club; Knights of Columbus; Eagles, Moose, or Elks lodges; or any other civic-minded organization in the area about sponsoring a local elementary or preschool. The three different curriculum kits in the “Adopt-A-School Program” offer a relatively inexpensive way for an organization to support its local schools. School district representatives who attended the School Nutrition Association (SNA) conference and trade show in Philadelphia in June showed particular interest in PBH’s "Adopt-A-School Program" so we know it would be a welcome addition to their curriculum. Retail members: when planning community involvement for this fall, remember that the “Adopt-A-School Program” kits are a great way for individual stores to support local schools – very affordable and appreciated.

Parents’ role in the diet of their children is the focus of International Fruit and Vegetable Alliance’s (IFAVA) latest scientific newsletter. The newsletter discusses positive changes in potential determinants associated with increased fruit and vegetable intake among primary school children, the role of parental control practices in children’s BMI and diet, and the Parents Jury – a grassroots approach to obesity prevention in Australia.
