2017 Annual Conference Recap

 

The annual conference for Produce for Better Health Foundation, The Consumer Connection, was held April 5-7 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Close to 250 fruit and vegetable marketers and executives, retail buyers and vice presidents, foodservice operators, registered dietitians, bloggers, commodity boards, suppliers, growers and university professors and students attended the conference.  The conference afforded attendees the opportunity to Build strategic alliances, Grow their brand, Learn from vibrant speakers, Partner with colleagues, and Connect with Peers.

 

The conference opened Wednesday, April 5 and was filled with 1:1 business exchange appointments affording conference sponsors the opportunity to meet with any conference attendee, PBH Committee meetings and educational sessions focused on social media marketing, fruit and vegetable messaging that resonates with consumers and ideas on marketing organic fruit and vegetables.  The day concluded with the conference’s opening reception and first night of the evening lounge.

 

The second day of The Consumer Connection was filled with informative presentations and capped off by the infamous Walkabout Market Dinner, a culinary celebration of fresh, frozen, canned, dried fruit and vegetables, and 100% juice, as well as the last night of the evening lounge.  Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, MS, RDN, President and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation began the day outlining her ‘from seed to sauté pan to table’ vision for the foundation.  Several educational sessions were also offered focusing on the role of fruit and vegetables in the search for better health, strategies for improving flavor and increasing demand for fruit and vegetables, learning how and when to introduce fruit and vegetables to babies, educating consumers on farming practices and new food labeling requirements.  The day concluded with the Walkabout Market Dinner which highlighted various dishes featuring fruit and vegetables from our sponsors. 

 

The third, and final, day of PBH’s annual conference, The Consumer Connection, kicked off with the presentations from the finalists of PBH’s Formula 5 Marketing Competition, followed by the keynote speaker presentation, Create Distinction: What to Do When Great Isn’t Good Enough to Grow, by Scott McKain.  The annual PBH awards luncheon honored the 2016 Champions, Role Models, Supermarket RDs of the Year, Excellence Winners and the winners of the Formula 5 Marketing Competition.  The conference concluded with a closing reception overlooking the mountains of Scottsdale.

PBH 2016 Supermarket RDs of the Year

 

To continue its longstanding history of identifying and honoring the hard work of industry members, apart from their company, who have gone ‘above and beyond’ in their support of the foundation’s mission, Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) is pleased to announce the 2016 Supermarket Dietitians of the Year. 

 

PBH’s Supermarket Dietitians of the Year award recognizes the top supermarket registered dietitians and/or health and wellness staff for their support of Fruits & Veggies—More Matters and of the collective goal of the increasing the sale and consumption of fruit and vegetables.  The 2016 Supermarket Dietitians of the Year were honored during the Awards Luncheon held during PBH’s 2017 Annual Conference:

Formula 5 Marketing Competition

 

The third year of the Formula 5 marketing competition was marked by increased growth and expansion of the competition, culminating in 4 finalists presenting their marketing proposals during PBH’s 2017 Annual Conference: The Consumer Connection.  The competition offers marketing majors, at accredited colleges and universities within the United States, the opportunity to influence fruit and vegetable marketing, sales, and consumption within America.

 

In 2016, the competition grew significantly in terms of total participants; 49 proposals from 14 universities across the country were received.  After an internal review, 4 proposals were selected to be presented during the 2017 Annual Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.  A panel of 5 judges scored each presentation based on criteria such as: Business Proposition, Financials, Marketing Tactics, Measurements, and Viability of the Product/Marketing Proposal. 

 

The final winning order was announced during PBH’s annual awards luncheon.

  • 1st Place – Arizona State University
  • 2nd Place – California State University, Fresno
  • 3rd Place – West Chester University
  • 4th Place – University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
